Report of meeting held on 25th Nov
Meeting of MCJ 25 was held today 25th November 2014, at Kadri Park from 1 pm onwards. Members present included Surendra Shetty, Florine Roche, Ronald Fernandes, Smitha Shenoy, Krishna Mohana Talengala, Krishna Kishore, Venu Vinod, Yogish Holla, Vasanth Konaje, Harish Motukana, Sushilendra and Suresh Pally.
Venue: The meeting went on as per agenda points. The venue of the event will be held Student Activity Centre (many of you must be remembering the venue with nostalgia) in the University campus. Two registrars of university Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya and Prof Evaluation Prof Narayan have agreed to be the guests. Availability of V C will be known tomorrow as a group is going to Varsity tomorrow to meet V C and oversee other arrangements at the University Campus. A responsibility to oversee this is shared among members present today.
Invitations: Invitations will be printed mostly digital except for few which will be printed to be given to the guests on stage. Decided to have three banners at the univ campus including one banner on the stage. Invitations will be extended on behalf of MCJ 25 and below alumni members of MCJ dept. Decided to invite present students to the event.
Honouring teachers: decided to honour six teachers past and present with shawl, fruits, flowers and memento with a small writing on it. Responsibility is assigned to one of the members to talk to outstation teachers before sending a formal invite and also to arrange fruits flowers etc.
Budget estimate: Assuming that members participating in the event will be around 50 and another 30 students from MCJ we can expect a crowd of around 100. Fixed the budget at Rs. 50,000/- to meet refreshments, lunch, honouring things (heee haaa) cost of invitations, mementos and other incidental expenses. Individual contributions fixed at a minimum of Rs. 1000/- and there is no limit for maximum contributions (bingo). Sponsors are welcome! Surendra Shetty W C President showed his generosity by making a donation of Rs. 2200/-.
Bank account: Treasurer Smitha Shenoy has opened an account in her name in Corporation Bank. The details of the bank account will be uploaded by Treasurer. Members are welcome to deposit the amount directly to the account thr whatever means convenient to you. But please mention your names and other details while remitting the amount.
Finalising list of participants: Since the event and its planning hinges on the number of participants it was decided to work on finalising the list of participants in the event so that we get an idea to make arrangements. So all members you can intimate your participation by mail or thr blog. Krishna Mohan and Krishna Kishore will come out with a modus operandi.
Programme Skeleton: P Skelton goes like this. Welcome by MC, escorting guests to dais, (prayer song if anyone volunteers) formal welcome, lighting lamp, introductory speech, inaugural address by Registrar Eva, felicitation of teachers, sharing of views of alumni, presidential address by Registrar and thanks giving. Followed by lunch. Afternoon the alumni will meet to decide on the formation of Alumni association of MCJ in the same venue.
Stage Arragement: Stage arrangements assigned to members. Mike and other settings will be finalised tomorrow during our visit to the campus if the same is made available by the univ.
Menu: Menu for the event depends on the amount we will be able to collect. Since the budget is fixed at 50k we will give a decent lunch (vegetarian). Whether to provide breakfast or not depends on how much our members will be able to collect. So if you want to have a good breakfast and a sumptuous lunch contribute to the funds. Aslo ensure participation of many alumni.
Eliciting views of Alumni: Alumni can send their views whatever they want to say about the department - both good and bad to ensure that our department is able to face the challenge of bringing out good products to suit modern-day requirement of the diverse media. These should be within 100 words but will be edited if required to present in a moderate language to suit the occasion. (There is every possibility that the bitterness may come out too harshly) which we want to avoid. Members can send their views to the specialemail id created for the purpose mcjmngvarsity@gmail.com
How to reach members other than through Whatsapp: There are quite a few alumni who are not on whatsapp. So members decided to collect their mobile numbers and even mail ids so that they can be communicated to them also. Members are requested to cooperate.
Few more details will be finalised tomorrow after our visit to university details of which will be communicated to all members in the group.
Are we up to the mark?
After spending two years in MCJ department of Mangalore University, can a student easily walk into a news room and perform the tasks bestowed on him/her?
I feel, that’s the question we have to consider and discuss seriously on the occasion. Technology is growing rapidly and today’s software turns obsolete tomorrow. Moreover, web journalism is gaining prominence day by day. Is our MCJ department considering these developments seriously?
Moreover, good command over English is the need of the hour. Even for vernacular journalists, just Kannada is not enough to survive in the media industry. Especially when it comes to translating a copy (translation business is also a lucrative segment nowadays) or interviewing a person who does not know Kannada, the vernacular journalist faces tough time if his English is poor. Therefore, the MCJ department needs to think seriously on this matter.
Another issue is, industry-academic interaction. The more the industry-academic interaction, the higher the chances of understanding the requirements of the industry. It not only improves the practical knowledge of the student, but also enhances the job opportunities.
And the most important aspect is managerial skills. As I know, when semester system was introduced in 2004, a subject on management was introduced in the MCJ department. But the media schools in general have not taken the need of managerial studies seriously. Instead, the theoretical aspects of media (and to some extent technical skills) are given utmost importance. When a student begins his/her career in the media field, technical as well as theoretical skills come handy for him/her. When he/she is promoted to a higher level, the journalist becomes a manager also. If he is a poor manager, he fails as a journalist at this stage, though he is good in his editorial jobs. Because, at this stage he starts managing men. If he manages men well, he has every chances of reaching the top management level of the organisation. At this level, his/her task is to understand the policies of the employers and implementing them in the organisation. I am not attempting to draw parallels between Columbia School of Journalism and Mangalore University but just trying to throw light on some of the areas where we could or should improve.

Latest update
We also requested GPS to find out the availability of the senate hall (which is under repair now) or if that is not ready any other alterative hall for our programme scheduled for Dec 20th. . He has promised to get back to SS by this evening. SS will follow the matter with GPS and inform us about these developments in a day or two.
At the same time GPS also showed us the MCJ class room hall which can accommodate about 50 to 60 people. Anyways, we have kept the options open and the availability or the suitability of the hall will be confirmed on the 26th when again we have to go to the university to meet the VC.
We spent about one hour with GPS and got some stills clicked which are already posted in Whatsapp. Then we went to meet the VC to invite him to preside over our function. He was not available and therefore we have to meet him on 26th as there is a function in University on the day and he is sure to be available in the campus. We spoke to his PA and collected his email and mobile numbers and Ronnie has agreed to follow this matter and keep the WC members informed about the development.
Then we went to meet Registrar Evaluation Prof B Narayana to invite him to be the chief guest of our function. He was kind enuf to agree and hence his participation is confirmed. We could not meet Registrar P S Yadapadithaya as he was not available in the campus. Ronnie has once again volunteered to do the needful to talk to him over phone and confirm or we will try to meet him on 26th if he is available in the campus on that day.
We went around some of the blocks where many of us have some fond memories of the activities we had indulged in during our two years in the Campus. Some were nostalgic as they recollected good old memories of the good or bad time they had in the campus. We left the campus at around 1.45 and reached Mangalore by 2.15pm. Except KK and KM the remaining four had lunch together and departed at 3pm with the promise to meet once again on 26th.
So on 26th we will have a clear picture and based on that we can go ahead with our plan including holding the next meeting may be on 27th itself but we will decide on 26th. We want presence of more number in the next meeting. Those interested to participate be prepared and come with suggestions, if any for the next meeting.

An Introduction to Celebration (The Committee Meeting Report)
The Department of Mass Communication and journalism of Mangalore University is celebrating its silver jubilee this academic year. It is a matter of great pride to all the alumni and therefore a few students took the initiative to have a get together of the alumni and celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner. Though many of us have gone through a bitter experience in the two years we spent in this department, it cannot be denied that the degree has helped us to have a professional career.
The initiative resulted in a few students (5) holding its first meeting on 8th of November. The first decision taken at the meeting was to fix the date for the get-together on December 20, 2014. The date was chosen taken into consideration such as avoiding first Saturday of New Year and second Saturday which is also a holiday and also the date nearer to the two day seminar organised by the MCJ department which comes in the last week of January.
It was also decided that the venue of the get together should be in the campus and Vice Chancellor of the University should be invited to preside over the function. We also fixed the next meeting date as November 12, where it was decided to elect working committee members of the alumni association formed for the purpose of this celebration.
In the meeting held today eight members were present. Surendra Shetty was elected as president and Florine Roche as Secretary of the working committee. Krishna Kishore Joint Secretary, Smith Shenoy as Treasurer. Ronald Anil Fernandes, Krishnamohan Talengala and Sharath Hegde as PRO’s of the Alumni Association.
We need financial support to conduct the event. It has been decided to open a bank account in the name of an individual (Treasurer Smitha Shenoy) so that members can send their contributions (amount not fixed yet) directly to the bank account the details of which will be communicated subsequently to the members.
Krishnamohan Talengala will open an exclusive group of MCJ alumni in Whatsapp to help members keep in touch and communicate the developments in this regard.
The meeting also decided that a few members should meet Chairman of the Depart. G P Shivaram to request for the venue. The meeting will be either on 18th or 19th and a few members will fix an appt with him and also with the VC on the same day.
It was decided that the programme will start in the morning at 10 am (9.30 registration and tea) and end with lunch.
The programme will have VC to preside over. Decided to call all the lecturers who have rendered service in the dept. They include G P Shivaram, Dr Nagaraj, Dr Poornananda, Maheshchandra Guru, Waheeda Sultana and umeshchandra.
V C will preside over the function.
Instead of allowing members to convey their views and feelings it was decided that a male and female alumni will read the views of the members (they have to give in writing) so that the message we need to convey to the department is given in a subtle manner.
Further details will be decided in the next meeting which will be decided after meeting Shivaram and VC.
