Dear MAAM
members
December 20 2014 will go down memory lane for all the alumni especially those who participated in the event. We sympathise with those alumni who could not be a part of this memorable event, though they wanted to due to their professional and personal preoccupations. For those who participated it was like home coming – reliving the memories of the two years spent in the campus, meeting their teachers, batch mates, juniors, seniors and lecturers from other departments and much more. Moreover meeting at least one or two alumni from all the 25 batches was the highlight for most of us.
Among the guests except Prof B Narayan failed to turn up. But Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa and Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya were present. Among teachers Prof Maheshchandra Guru and Mr Umeshchandra did not attend the event. Dr Poornanada had come specifically for the event. Vice Chancellor Prof Byrappa was there till the end of the two hour programme despite his pressing schedule. In his presidential address the Vice Chancellor called for raising the standards of Mangalore University to global level keeping in tune with the changing needs. Prof Yadapadithaya regretted the increasing tendency of the “culture of complacency and arrogance” in the media. He said forming alumni by the MCJ department will add strength to Mangalore Alumni Association (MAA) and would inspire other departments to start their own alumni associations.
An important part of the event was to honour the teachers of the department. The teachers were honoured by alumni in group of five batches each starting with Chairman Prof G P Shivaram, Prof Poornananda, Prof Waheeda Sultana and also K Vasudeva Rao (who was teaching photography for MCJ students). Both Prof Shivarama and Prof Poornanada spoke on the occasion.
Apart from getting a PG Degree there are a few alumni who are doubly benefitted being MCJ students of Mangalore University. They found their life partner in the department and the vast campus of the University proved to be an ideal venue for love to blossom. Finally it resulted in them becoming life partners. There are many such MCJ couple but only two couple attended the event. Another two came minus their partners. Though we could not congratulate them in the way we envisaged (with a romantic song at the background with other members clapping in unison as the VC was in a hurry to leave the venue) we somehow managed to acknowledge their presence with a rose.
The event began with a prayer song by Sarita, a MCJ final year student. This was followed by welcome address by Ronal Fernandez. The programme was inaugurated formally by lighting lamp. Florine Roche presented keynote address. Smith Shenoy compered the programme.
The alumni members also shared their views and gave suggestions to improve the standard of the department. The WC members also presented a memorandum of these views/suggestions to the Vice Chancellor. Before the VC left we had a group photo. Members once again congregated at the venue where we spent another an hour or so for self introduction. By then we were starving and had to break for lunch. The lunch was quite sumptuous with holige and coconut for sweet topped with ice cream.
The afternoon session began with right earnest though the number was a little less as compared to morning session. The only and most important agenda of the afternoon session was formation of Alumni Association. We named it as Media Alumni Association of Mangalagangotri (MAAM). Members decided to conduct at least three programmes a year from MAAM on media related issues. Office bearers of MAAM were unanimously elected. Members fixed May 2, 2015 as the day of Annual General Meeting. Finally election of office bearers was held.
All the members were elected unanimously giving equal representation to . Venu Sharma is the Working President & Surendra Shetty Hon President. Ronald Anil Fernandes (Mangalore), Upendra Shetty (Bangalore) and Balakrishna Naik (Delhi) as Vice Presidents and Florine Roche General Secretary (Mangalore). Venu Vinod (Mangalore) Naveen Ammembal (Bangalore) and Yogeesh Holla (Mangalore) were also unanimously elected as secretaries. Smith Shenoy (Mangalore) was elected as Treasurer. 12 alumni were elected as members of MAAM. They are - Balakrishna Holla (Mangalore-Udupi) , Krishna Kishore (Mangalore), Krishnamohana (Mangalore) Sharat Hegde (Koppala) Vipin (Bangalore) Deepak(Bangalore) Amrit Jogi (Bangalore), Prashanth Rai (Bangalore) , Nagesh Shenoy (Davanagere), Sathish Kumar Andinje (Shimoga), Vijay (Bangalore) and Ravi Prakash (Bangalore). Tea was served during the meeting at the venue itself - Tea/coffee with hot Chattambade. We then disbursed before saying goodbye to one another for the day. Some of us met GPS at his chamber before heading home.
It was indeed a memorable day for most of us and we firmly believe this is just the beginning. We intend to continue to work with the same vigor and zest. Thank you all for making this event a successful and memorable one. Three cheers!!!
-Florine Roche, secretary, MCJ25 working committee.
